Without looking at Salty Wininic’s papers he catches your eye with his striking build, good feet, big bones, with a good mind and disposition to compliment him.  It’s no wonder why when you look at all the legendary horses in his bloodlines. His Sire, Lazy M Salty Blue, is a 1993 model blue roan stallion, 16.8 % Joe Hancock and 39% Blue Valentine. Salty is 15.1 hands tall, weighs about 1200 pounds, and has an extremely mild temperament, along with being very athletic. His Dam, Kellys Wininic, is a Granddaugher of Just Plain Colonel, whose get have won more than $1 million in the cutting arena. Just Plain Colonel is a son of Colonel Freckles.

If you have been around rodeo at all then it is most likely you have seen or heard about Blue Valentine horses.  "He is the best steer horse in the arena this year," was the statement made in 1970 by Everett Shaw about Blue Valentine to Hyde Merritt. Shaw was flagging the tripping that year at Cheyenne Frontier Days when Hyde roped his last performance there on Blue Valentine. Shaw's comment was not to be taken lightly. Inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1979 and National Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1980, Shaw's roping career spanned half a century. During the three decades from post-war 1940's to the 1960's, he earned six RCA Steer Roping Championships. By 1970, his reputation among ropers and the world of rodeo was legendary. So, an endorsement from Everett Shaw should be enough for Blue Valentine to confirm his rightful place among great arena horses. Blue Valentine was foaled in Cochise County, Arizona in 1956 out of Beauty's Dream, a daughter of Valentine. His sire was Red Man by the legendary Joe Hancock.

On Salty Wininic’s bottom side are several great horses but two stand-outs are the legendary Colonel Freckles and Fillinic.  Colonel Freckles, won the 1976 NCHA Futurity.  It was considered the toughest futurity in the history of the event, as the field included such exceptional cutting horses as; Docs Oak, Freckles playboy, Docs Remedy, Smooth Herman, Montana Doc, Docs Hickory, & more.  Colonel Freckles’ offspring have earned over $4.5 million in cowhorse earners!  Colonel Freckles horses are prized by showmen and working cowboys alike for their desire to please and great attitudes.  He was recently inducted into the American Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame in 2004.

Fillinic’s Sire, Arizona Junie, was a descendant of Anita, a foundation broodmare for Goodyear Farms.  Anita’s foals all showed lots of speed.  Fillinic’s Dam, Alouette, did not have a performance record but her full sister was Dusty Boss, who won the Arizona Cutting Horse of the Year title in 1948 with Hank Alrich.  Alouette was also judged Arizona’s Broodmare of the Year in 1950.  Fillinic and Greg Ward took the prestigious open hackamore championship at San Francisco’s Cow Palace, the largest show on the Pacific Coast.  They won it the next year and went on to win the open bridle championship the year after that.  She was a three time California Reined Cow Horse Association top ten finalist and in 1966 she stood at the top of ranks as Open Bridle Champion.  Fillinic was a proven winner in CRCHA and AQHA.  Her trainer and owner Greg Ward wrote on her tombstone, “A man is lucky to have one great horse in his lifetime. She gave us a lifetime of greatness”.

With Salty’s natural ability, cowyness, good mind, athleticism and speed his offspring are sure to please whether it be in cutting, the rodeo arena, ranch work, or just for pleasure.  He produces lots of color; some include blue roans, bay roans, grays, buckskins, and sorrel with flaxen mane and tail.  Call Morgan for more information at
